Antarctica sets new record for sea ice

The sea ice surrounding Antarctica, which, as I reported in “Don’t Sell Your Coat,” has been steadily increasing throughout the period of satellite measurement that began in 1979, has hit a new all-time record high for areal coverage. Continue reading

This Is What’s Happening

This is what’s happening: Global sea ice just had its best year, basically a full calendar year with a zero-anomaly, since 2004. Scientists told us that global warming was accelerating at the poles, through the polar amplification process. Part of … Continue reading

Did a 2006 Arctic “Heat Wave” Largely Cause 2007’s Sea Ice Melt?

In terms of the mechanisms restricting ice melt this season, to the extent that they have anything to do with air temperature, a cool Arctic above 80N basically means an absence of overrunning air from southern latitudes. Pretty much every temp spike up there is simply a wind spike — from the south. While warm sea water incursions probably matter significantly more than air temps when it comes to sea ice melt, air temps do for sure matter, too. As an example, maybe the best example: I don’t believe that 2007’s then-record melt could have taken place without a prolonged high-Arctic warming, wind-generated without doubt, during the first months of 2006.

DMI Arctic Sea Ice Graph Goes Back to Normal

Many had taken note of the Danish Meteorological Institute’s strange sea ice graph apparently showing projected sea ice for the next two weeks. It couldn’t have looked much weirder, unless they had continued the line off the graph and off … Continue reading

Clinton’s Trip to Arctic Deconstructed

If you’re a busy politician and you want to sound green, what’s better than a quick trip to a polar ice cap? Nothing! Unfortunately, sounding green and understanding the environment and Earth’s paleoclimate are wildly different things, it turns out. … Continue reading

UN Climate Report Confuses Arctic and Antarctic

Things get stranger and stranger with the United Nations’ climate change science compendium published two weeks back. First, it was learned that the graph indicating temperature for the past 1,000 years had been taken from Wikipedia, where it had been … Continue reading

Arctic Cooling Has Begun

What follows is the first guest post on Talking About The Weather. I chose Peter Taylor‘s short essay on the Arctic out of respect for Peter’s research, his calm during intense debates, and the focus he brings to the issues. As … Continue reading
